What I notice as a rank beginner

I've lost a LOT of games but almost never run short of time. Some people seem to think the goal is not checkmate but rather preserving time.  I finished a game with about 11 min left and my opponent lost but still had 18minutes left in a 15/10 game. I'm sure that if he'd slowed down he'd have beaten me handily. Seems like, for some, finishing a game with more than 10 min is essential. I am not trying to be snarky, but truly don't understand the stratgy

Hey @tmargul 👋

I appreciate your honest reflection — it's a great insight, and you're not alone in noticing this!

In longer time controls like 15|10, the extra time isn't just about survival — it's meant to give players more room to think critically and avoid silly mistakes. That said, some players move fast simply because they're more confident in certain positions, or because they're used to blitz or bullet time formats where quick thinking is essential.

But you're spot on: winning with 10+ minutes left doesn’t mean they "won with time" — they still had to win with moves. So if you kept your cool and played better, you earned that win, regardless of how quickly your opponent played.

Improving at chess isn't about using all your time — it’s about using the time you need to make good decisions. And it sounds like you're doing just that, so keep it up! 💪
