What if a girl became World Chess Champion?

Well, well, I've actually taken the "Mensa Workout" quiz and scored a whooping 86%!

I was awarded 26/30 marks. :)

Oh! Yeah I've heard of Mensa. I chave a chess tactics book where Mensa was mentioned in it.

Women are going to win this no matter what you say.

Don't believe me? Just get married....then divorced in America...You lose the kids, the house, the car, you get to pay alimony, and then you lose your job! Plus you get to keep all the payments for the house and the car!

Then some other guy gets to live in your house where your ex lives, that you continue to make payments on, so not only is she getting support form him, she's getting it from you too. Since you're paying for everything else, you might as well just pay all the utility bills since everything is in your name.

So I wouldn't mess with any woman if I were you.

You're starting to sound like a troll yourself, Jamie, though of the accidental sort.  If nothing else, I've rarely seen a person call out a troll and then become such utter troll-bait.  You ought to be a bit embarrassed by that.  Complaining about sexism and then using demeaning ad hominem tactics is wrong headed and, frankly, bizarre.  It shouldn't be necessary.

And your assumptions about the poster (troll or not) are outrageous.  As far as I can tell from this forum, we do not even know for certain that the person is male.  You're simply making an assumption (one with which I tend to agree, by the way).  That is not the way to conduct a discussion.

If your only talking-point is that our troll here is being offensive, I think you're just wasting an opportunity.  The comments about "PC run amok" are not entirely off-base here.  I, too, am tired of people just screaming about how hurt their feelings are and calling that a serious political counter-point.  It's not...it's your emotional reaction.

c-h-e-a-t-e-r is so clearly wrong about what he knows and does not know, and so clearly wrong about what has prevented women from becoming WC so far that we do not need to bother with all the wailing and gnashing of teeth (especially since this is exactly what he wants).  It's easy enough to refute what he is saying by rational argument.

Let me introduce one more issue to consider.  Chess is a game that women seem to be a lot less interested in than men (thus resulting in a female WC being a very unlikely scenario). Is that really a problem?  Why do we care how women choose to waste their time as compared to men?

The passage is, of coursem from the famous solioquy in Shakespeare's Macbeth.  C-h-e-a-t-e-r has attempted to make the case that "male superiority" is a universal truth.  It is not.  Such a claim, as stated in this topic, is "full of sound and fury" (boasts), but ultimately is just a tale "told by an idiot" (intellectually defective person), "signifying nothing" (having no basis).

I have never seen "trolls" quote Macbeth before.

Damn, Jamie, no offence, but do you really have to make a 2-screen-heights long quote?! Tongue Out

You could delete the irrelevant nested quote stuff - it makes the page easier to read!

Just trying to be helpful. ^.^

Good for you, you probably have a high IQ Smile. No one cares Yell.

What?  Ole' Billy Faulkner didn't make that one up all on his lonesome?  Well, I'll be a pritty spring chicken on a rainy afternoon!  I'm just plum bowled over by that there erudition of yours, Jamie.  Aw, but I never did understand none of that Scottish stuff with the floatin' daggers and the crazy ladies.  Just went right over my little head, I s'pose.

I guess I owe you a pair of penny loafers and a few pounds of hay seed for that one, Jamie.  Thanks a bunch!

Good point.

We don't know if this is all there is to the issue. Maybe it is, maybe it isn't.

Also, maybe it is interesting to wonder about how we like to waste our time and why :)

Yeah, I think it is interesting to wonder.  You got any thoughts about it of your own?

batgirl

But you can only relate the how and why you waste your own time, speculating on how and why someone else wastes her time is... umm... a waste of time.

I did the same and got 29/30, but I have never taken an actual Mensa IQ test.

Well, that was a waste of time.

TheGrobe

How I waste my time isn't near as interesting a topic to me as how others waste my time.

Well, I'll disagree then. It's at least not inherently uninteresting. It's just a psychological wondering. Not that I feel like wondering about it at this particular time, but I could see myself wanting to sometimes :)

batgirl

I think I've wasted enough time on this.

Good for you, I scored 30/30, what gives.

Maybe it would be a waste of time for a girl to become world champion.

Anyone wanna meme that ?

Agreed, but that's not my point in asking.  What I'm wondering is whether it is important for us as a society to encourage gender equity in something like chess, or if it is sufficient to guarantee women's access to all levels of the game, and then just accept that a lot fewer of them are interested.

For instance, it's doesn't bother me that more men than women like to watch dumb action movies.  As long as the theater lets any women who do want to watch those movies in, then I'm fine with a gender gap in dumb action movie watching.

So, is chess something like a dumb action movie or is it more important to close the gender gap in chess?

Glass-Spider

If its dumb, the guys will take it more seriously and master it.

JamieDelarosa

I don't see chess, or doing the crossword puzzle, or sudoku, or the Jumble, as a waste of time.  We all deserve some time to ourselves, and these games and puzzles are intellectual stimulation.

I don't think any of us want to end up staring at the flowers at the old folks home.
