Prior to the FIDE WC cycle, there was really no such thing as a professional chess players and the WC's by and large came from academia. Up unti '72 the only players who could reasonably make a decent living were the Soviets and the Soviet School dominated high level chess. Had the Soviet School promoted women chess players as much as men there would be more high level female players everywhere. It is telling that no women achieved GM prior to the colapse of the Soviet Union. Judit Polgar certainly proves it is possible to be a contender.

I should be just as famous as Carlsen, because the only reason I'm not as good as him is because I just didn't feel like putting in the time.
I don't know, I just think sometimes when people are too excuse happy it can devalue people's accomplishments. It's much easier to say you could have done something than to do it.
And at the same time it's not fair to assume you're amazing because you're good at an esoteric activity, because it may just be a sign of your obsessiveness.
