I don't think it was right for them to ban the Russian flag either but that is the reason that it shows international on Russian profiles, chess.com made a blog post about it a while back

There are a lot of different reasons to use the International flag. Some might do it as an an additional anonymization method, for example

Focus Chess please ... as you are far from one to speak on ones behalf ... this is not a political forums but a forum for experts in a sport ... to which by you profile you seem to lack the skills of such and therein need to study vs speak on others behalf ... please study chess before you except us to acept your comments of sillyness.
It generally means you are not proud of your country or you simply just want to hide your nationality. But the main purpose was to provide people with multiple citizenships an option to represent I believe (I am not sure about it)
