I say, allowing 6 passed pawns to allow this move must have been a stroke of brilliance!
Basely, there is two checks at once.

No, but it does illustrate a nice point. Either attacking piece could be taken, but it's still checkmate.

Sometimes you have to exaggerate to demonstrate the lesson. The only way to repel a double-check is to move the king (no interposition or capture). 
a double check looks like the discovered check, but dont is, is two attacks on the king on the same move. Look at these:
