So far nobody has mentioned the best: Tarrasch's "The Game Of Chess." Read the reviews of this book on Amazon.com.
What is a good book to start learning chess if you have never studied Chess?

LOTS of online chess books at Google books! Click here. However, most all the complete ones are old enough that the copyright has expired so they are legally freely distributable. So they are about 100 years old. There are excepts of more recent books, but not the entire texts, only enough to perhaps get an interested party to purchase the book.

Also LOTS of online chess books at Archive.org. Click here. They are also ones with expired or no copyrights, so most are about 100 years old.

@whoever mentioned the mastering the chess openings books I would say it is far to advanced for a first book.
In terms of openings I would look at pawn structure chess by soltis before I went into that(and I still wouldn't have it be my first book).
Hi Everybody
I played chess as a youngster up to the age of 10 and never studied the game seriously.
Now I have come back to the game( and fallen in love Big time).
I seem to be winning more games than i lose ,but i know I can improve.
Any suggestions for a couple of book titles to get me started would be most helpful
Forget the books and get on the Chess Mentor for the price of several books.
