I wondered the same. also the term troll. I read a thread earlier that mentioned troll and trolling here. maybe I'm just ignorant, I have no idea what they ment.
i joined 3 days ago. how am i supposed to know chess slang? are you trolling...i really hope so.
The guy was agreeing with you and said that didn't know the term patzer AND didn't know the term troll.
Methinks you protest too quickly about not trolling...
Also, if you ever see a term you don't know online, there's this amazing website you can use... here, let me get the link for you:
But ok, also

(wow, their front page is really dumb, but don't be fooled, it's an actual site you can use to search slang lol)

hear you loud and clear about trolling. ha, guess I really didn't need a definition after all. :) Google and dictionaries are fantastic. instead of just googling something, every once in a while it's nice to see others views, perspectives and definitions. thanks to all. this chess.com is a great place to learn!

I think every country has a slang for a very bad chess player.
LET US WRITE THE slangs for PATZER in each country:
ENGLISH: PATZER
PORTUGUESE (spoken in Brazil): CAPIVARA (English = Capybara).
Capivara is the biggest rodent in the world, as you can see in the link below:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capybara
I think they named very bad chess players as CAPIVARAs because the capivara is always stopped, with a distant look - as a chess player looking to the pieces in chess boards.

"Patzeeeeeeer."
Lol, here in South Africa we like using that name when playing in a chess park, though it is just sarcasm.
Seniors may be called patzers and, patzers may be called seniors. Believe me, it only takes one good reply of a win for your opponent who called you a 'patzer', to be called by a worser name, i.e. Monkey, My Junior or Novice.

what actually is a patzer, though?
or was the term just invented for chess?
According to Merriam Webster Dictionary:
"Origin of patzer: probably from German Patzer bungler, from patzen to blunder. First Known Use: 1959".
