What is 'Average'?

if you include everybody, even those who have never played before (assuming you explain the rules etc.) its probably around 1000
but there are these charts for chess.com ratings- where the peak of the distribution curve is around 1200 http://www.chess.com/livechess/players?type=Blitz
can't tell you about otb though

You need to learn how to use search engines for questions like this, unless you're content to rely on (mostly) hearsay and unsubstantiated opinions.

I think "average" in chess is somewhere around 1900-2000.
A typical "average" statement from kenpoo

By "average" did you mean totally inaccurate?
ken's "average" statement usually fits this description.
I think you should look at your ranking in chess.com as a comparison. I hover around over 2000 and according to chess.com my ranking is around 98.8 % out of 268,750 members. I think "average" is where majority of chess.com players are and where that majority is at is for chess.com to answer.

Reading all 3 of these relatively short explanations should be helpful here:
http://www.differencebetween.net/science/difference-between-average-and-mean/
http://www.diffen.com/difference/Mean_vs_Median
http://www.purplemath.com/modules/meanmode.htm

that probably would be a good estimate of the current mathematical average for all FIDE tournament players.
this, however, should not be confused with the strength that is generally considered "average" chess ability/play.
I think "average" in chess is somewhere around 1900-2000. but people don't like to hear this because it rains on their parade so to speak. it forces them to confront the fact that they might be a little lazy when it comes to chess and haven't really trained/worked as hard as they think they have and their 2000-2200 internet blitz rating doesn't actually mean as much they think it does.
Or because it's nonsense and clearly incorrect. You can repeat it 50 times but average has a specific meaning of which you are apparently unaware, even though you told me you weren't.
i went to @nimzoroy abovementioned site for us to read and it gave me an idea about what is average. meeee! because i can't see heads or tails of what i'm reading about "mean" or "average" or something like that. hehe

Funny thing is, if you look at the page mentioned
http://www.chess.com/livechess/players?type=Blitz
it tells you the average for members is about 1160.
Scroll through the list, after sorting by average rating and it's only the last 5 or 6 tiny countries that have their own internal average rating less than the overall average. All the countries with that make up the bulk of membership are above average.
Reminds me of Garrison Keilor's town of Lake Wobegon, where all the women are good looking and the children are above average
I'm just wondering all things considered - what is the 'average' otb Chess rating. I'm talking about someone who has played for a few years (at least 30 games etc)
I know the floor in FIDE is 1200 but I guess 1600 FIDE/1500 USCF would be average?
Sorry if this has already been discussed.
