What is chess?

I heard the press conference with Carlsen and Karjakin right now after their 11th match game for WC. And they had to answer what chess is. Carlsen says that first of all chess i sport. And he added that it is also science, but if you want art you have to go elsewhere. Well i am also from Norway but i dont agree with Magnus on this one. Chess is also art! Maybe not all  draws in 20 moves  look like art, but playing through some great games remind me of art. Art is what come to my mind if i play through many chessgames of the past. And it was Kramnik who said to watch Tals games is to see how God look like. Surely chess is also art and beauty as well as sport and science.

A board game

A sport

An art

A science

An obsession

A hobby

A time-waster

A word

A challenge

A competition

A relaxing activity

And many more...

You just have to choose.

You saw the press conference!! [!! means really bad move in chess]

I managed 2 minutes - they made no effort to inject ANY personality or humour.

Magnus doesn't play artistically and if chess is science then evolution has a case.

Read famous quotes from famous people related to chess, then you can conclude:

" Chess is a foolish expedientfor making idle people believe they are doing something very clever when they are only wasting their time.” George Bernard Shaw.

Chess is a matter of vanity. Alexander Alekhine.

Chess is not relaxing ; it's stressful even if you win. Jennifer Shahade.

Chess is not for the faint-hearted; it absorbs a person entirely. To get to the bottom of this game, he has to give himself up into slavery. Chess is difficult, it demands work, serious reflection and zealous research. Wilhelm Steinitz.

Chess is mental torture. Garry Kasparov.

At the end of the day, it's all about money. Garry Kasparov.

Chess is a sport; a violent sport. – Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968).

Chess players are madmen of a certain quality, the way the artist is supposed to be, and isn’t, in general. – Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968).

I am still a victim of chess. It has all the beauty of art – and much more. It cannot be commercialized. Chess is much purer than art in its social position. – Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968).

How many chess addicts does it take to change a light-bulb? Answer: they won't change it, they will play blindfold. MarcoBR444.

How many NAJGRUNFELDs does it take to screw-in a light-bulb? Answer: they won't change it, they will screw titled players blindfold. MarcoBR444.

To me, all aspects of chess are captured in "Chess is Life".  The more I think through the game, the more I see that it is a parable for everything you want it to be.  When I say chess is life, I don't mean to say that it is a substitute for life, only that in its complexities, chess and thinking about chess are a good way to think about the entirety of experience.

Well said thats whats I was thinking. Chess can be applied to many things if it is your wish to do so. The strategic nature of chess is what I have started to use to increase my overall learning experiences in life. Evidence of this is my improved rating brings out my improved planning skills for daily tasks. In a strong sense chess is mental training.

Well, i can't tell it's art. Art for me is music, paint, dance, and all the word around this.

No, chess for me it's not art.

A science, yes.

A passion.

A thinking word.

A solitary game.
