What is any hobby, game, or sport good for?  I would argue that chess at a minimum teaches you to think at least two or three moves ahead.  It's not unlike rock climbing in that regard.

It helps u stretch ur brain. This site however, turned corrupt (sorta) by children, is rlly givin' me a run for my goodness. Spoke at the time where a Taco Bell ad is showing a medieval debate with the order of "Bun-Chicken-Mayo-something" trying to be figured out.

Chess is for fun! Like sports, it's a game that you can play to have a good time and some friendly competition; plus; it teaches you to think through things and get better at reasoning and logic! I've really strengthened my relationship with my dad through chess, and it makes me happy!

Yeah... we all know.

Chess is enjoyable, it is good to fill the hours, and it's a way of comparing wits and intellectual ability.  However... it doesn't, at first glance, appear to be a very useful pursuit.  I often tell people that Chess is probably the most useless activity that I regularly engage in, especially when considering how much time I have devoted to it over the span of my life!

What is Chess ACTUALLY good for in the non-chess "real world"?  Anything?

This is what I've noticed.

Chess requires compex visualization of a sequential nature.  Any field of study involving complex interactions over time (example: mechanical engineering) can benefit from honing these types of abilities.  Chess also involves (when played correctly) evaluation of material trades, often in a variable scenario depending on the order of the trades.  This seems a lot like certain elements of financial planning and other fields involving trades of volatile commodities.  Finally, Chess seems to have a VAST field of knowlege that must be absorbed and applied before a player really begins to excel at the game.  I cannot help but think that this aspect of Chess would tend to serve the practitioner in almost ANY real-world endeavor should he or she apply the same level of discipline, research, and memorization to it.

What do you all see as the "usefulness" of Chess?  Is it truly as worthless a pursuit as most people think of It, or are there certain elements of the game that can be applied to non-chess pursuits?

Chess.com is getting me thru the pandemic, what is that worth?

Watching “I am not a GM” speed chess was one of my highlights. Seeing GM Eric Hanson tilt never gets old and makes me laugh every time.

The Covid Charity for India was one of the coolest things I have ever seen especially when  IM Levy Rozman donated $10k and Erik matched it.

Didn't he say something along the lines of "Lasker wasted his time playing chess, instead of doing mathematics"

That was said to have been Morphy, but Kindaspongey said that that quote could have been a phony.

Well, those of us who can remember the late ‘60s and ‘70s need a little extra time to process our thoughts. That and copious amounts of coffee.

I had already won my first chess tournament by the late 60s.
