The top first move in chess for White is 1. e4 (moving the king's pawn two spaces forward).
This is by far the most popular and historically significant opening move. It immediately claims central squares, opens lines for the queen and king's bishop, and prepares for castling. Many of the oldest and most well-known chess openings stem from 1. e4.
