It has done - time and time again, on these forums, for heaven's sake!

But this is the first time it’s ever been done today.

  1. Chess is recognized as a sport by the International Olympic Committee (IOC); since June 1999 FIDE has been the recognized International Sports Federation. As a member of the IOC, FIDE adheres to its rules, including, controversially, a requirement for doping tests.
  2. If it's good enough for the IOC to call it a sport  it's good enough for me.

There are dozens of Olympic events which clearly are not sports. The IOC will include anything if it thinks it might benefit it and increase the wealth and power of its members. To call a board game like chess a sport, marvellous game though it is, is absurd, despite what the IOC says.

It's a sporting game.

        I like corned beef hash.

that's the image I need to start my day.

But of course it is a sport!  Your opponent can be a good sport and give you a sporting chance!

When accessing a chess site thru a corporate firewall, it specifically classified it as a sport (which was allowed), rather than as a game site.

It's chess. Not really a sport but it's competitive and the best players almost alwayr are between 20 and 35 years old. But on the other side not just "a game", no gambling, luck plays a very small role, and so on.

In my opinion, chess requires an his own cathegory.

If you're truly interested about people's opinions, I'd suggest reading the (many) older threads, though it'd be a difficult search for meaningful comments.

If you're here to throw your opinion into the void, please go ahead.

There seems to be a suggestion that luck and/or gambling must be present for something to be called a game. This is not so. We should not be confused by the tendency to refer to certain gambling activities as "gaming".  There must be hundreds or thousands of genuine games where gambling plays no part.

Does it really matter? Some people get heated "Oh it's a sport alright!" As if calling it a sport would finally allow Chess to transcend into the higher realm of true being or some garbage like that. It would still ultimately be chess.

while we're on the subject, I feel that this suspicion generated over alleged cheaters is a little annoying and a little ridiculous, redundant, and it's boring. While I enjoy reading about history, I don't want to relive the minute by minute suspense of what it feels like to be persecuted. When I come to a chess site I'm here to enjoy my time and have fun.

whoops wrong thread. I blame the mobile. >>
