There's also a correlation between having more education/income and typically getting higher iq plus chess tends to be fairly classist and you have to travel everywhere sooo ....

Excuse me bro, my friend's father is a titled player. You dare to ruin his reputation? I mean, even better (or worse depending on the situation) I am also thinking to become a chess player.

Chess players are not really stupid, but they don’t have that much IQ. That being said, chess requires lots of hard work and time, so becoming a titled player is extremely impressive.

i'm not trying to ruin it! i'm js saying that magnus never even took an iq test and iq doesn't even matter that much in chess so.... i dont see the point in guessing what his iq is

Well you don’t need to say IQ doesn’t matter when we are discussing a topic about IQ

Probably 120-130 numerically, 80-130 verbally and figurally.

Even just from the graph it's clear the correlation is very weak.

Better axes for visualising a correlation would be percentile on each axis. Above 130 IQ is already in the top 2%, so that cluster on the numerical chart is quite strong.

No one on this forum knows what Carlsen's IQ is. Magnus may not know himself

IQ test are pseudo-science. Same with lie detector test. Yet for some reason the chess world is infatuated by both of them

Magnus Carlsen's IQ is a subject of much speculation and discussion, particularly within the chess community, given his exceptional chess abilities
.
Here is what is known:
  • Magnus Carlsen, a Norwegian chess grandmaster, is the current World Chess Champion. He is widely considered one of the greatest chess players of all time.
  • Carlsen has not publicly disclosed or taken an official IQ test.
  • Estimates, based on his chess abilities, suggest an IQ between 190 and 200. These estimates come from his strategic thinking and problem-solving skills during chess games, and his overall cognitive abilities.
  • An IQ score of 190-200 would be at a "genius" level, far exceeding the average IQ of 100 and the typical range of top chess players.
In summary: While an exact IQ score for Magnus Carlsen is not available, he is considered exceptionally intelligent based on his chess performance and is often attributed with an IQ in the 190-200 range.

But what do you think?

A bit above average is the most reasonable guess. But like most of the very best players, Magnus has some cognitive gifts and character traits that aren't measured by the standard IQ test
