I agree with Free-de-la-hoy: it depends on the situation. At your level (and mine) you should not wait to long with castling. Often castling short is faster.

A very important thing is to learn to look at your old games (analyse). So why not take a look at 5 or 6 of your games and ask the question: did I castle the right way?

If the King Side pawns were loosened in the opening, f, g, or h were pushed, then players will often castle Queen Side. Opposite side castling can lead to pawn storms, as both players can charge down the board without undermining their king's safety. The pawns loosen up the defense and pieces follow. Often the player who is quicker to attack (time advantage) wins. This can be successful for weaker players as defense requires accurate play and attacking is more tolerant of mistakes. For stronger players (not me) pawns storms are less effective as a superior position wins.

The same answer applies to bishop vs. knight, what is the best opening, is it ok to sacrifice a piece, and what should I eat for dinner. There is no right answer.

it depends to your opponent. if you castle to the same side with your opponent it dictates a type of game. if you castle to opposite side then it means another thing.
