I play the London... the Italian is a bit bland for me.

There isn't one "best" opening. Also how is the london not bland @TwhylerM

It offers good development and puts you in a comfortable, non-bland position.

One could argue that any comfortable position, is thereby bland!

It offers something different than normal king's pawn openings, and most people don't play it.

Italian's got the Max Lange Attack, Traxler Counterattack, Evans Gambit, Greco Attack etc etc. London has what?

a good position where crazy attacks and gambits like these are not needed.

Italian is a great opening, It was played by our beloved legend "Paul Morphy". There are plenty of lines in the Italian game.

most of the time, instead of going e5, your opponent will do the French, the Sicilian, the Caro-Kann, the Pirc, etc. and it won't be the Italian anymore... as with the London, it doesn't matter what your opponent will play, it will still be the London.

Perhaps it's just me, but I also have trouble thinking up moves after the setup is finished. Usually I end up having to trade off all my pieces, and reaching the endgame around move 25.

And you'd be surprised how many bullet players use the London

The English, on the other hand, offers many different options for white, it's much more unorthodox and therefore often more difficult to defend against, does not result in trading off pieces (and I've found that I can keep all my pieces for the first 20, or even 30 moves before a capture or trade is made, which I personally like). It's more flexible and can easily transpose into the Reti Opening, 1.d4 2.c4 openings, etc., and avoids all the annoying defenses like the Slav or Nimzo-Indian that you get with 1.d4 (not that I don't enjoy d4).

I have to admit, the English is not bland... I have never faced any opponent who has played it.
