I have heard that the Scotch Gambit is good but after reading articles and Forums I realize that it is not that great. What would you recommend?

e4 best by test according to bobby fischer.

Anyway, in my opinion there is no best opening. I think you should read this website to get yourself set with an openings reportoire.

Opening is closely related to level of competion.  Kasparov may play me 100 games using 1. a4, and he will beat me 100 times.  Does that mean 1.a4 is best?  No.   In blitz games and rapids, gambit games favor the one who prepared better (on gambits).  In GM games, understanding the latest theory of the most solid openings will give one of the player the 1 point.

Looking for a real good one?  Take a look at the (otb) competition, then choose.

Study openings thru experience, not thru books.  Once you reach close to class B(FIDE or USCF), start learning them in more detail.

The Queen's Gambit and Ruy Lopez are probably the most solid openings for White.

Various Indian Defenses, Sicilian Defense, and Slav games are popular defenses for Black.

If you like off-beat games, 1. Nf3, 1. c4, or King's Indian Defense, Modern Benoni, etc. are all good choices, even at the GM level.

Really though, any opening that has been named is solid. They may not be strong enough to win super GM tournaments, but any named opening can flat out dominate games where players are rated below 2100 or 2000!

And honestly, the Sicilian Defense and Queen's Gambit used to be a lot more fun to play before EVERYONE AND THEIR MOMS started picking them up :( They used to be my favorite openings because in high school, everyone opened with the Guioco Piano or Ruy Lopez, and I liked defending 1. e4 with the Sicilian, and opening with things like the English Opening (1. c4) and Queen's Gambit (1. d4 d5 2. c4). But now everyone plays them. I haven't had a good Ruy Lopez battle in a long time :( And I'm going off on a random opening rampage with St. George's Defense, Rat Defense, Alekhine's Defense, Russian Game, Modern Benoni, Old Benoni, Queen's Indian, Dutch Defense, Budapest Gambit, Nimzo-Larsen, and anything random I can think of!!

Any suggestions?

BELOW is a very interesting link showing opening stats. I'm not so sure that 1...c5 is the best answer to 1 c4, but against 1 e4 the Sicilian is the best. I switched to the Sicilian myself after observing how Black's central pawn majority kept coming up strong. As an e4 player myself, I have temporarily switched to d4 (The Tromp) while I reconsider the best approach to the Sicilian. An ambitious player must learn this defence to 1 e4. I believe it the best and also the most interesting.

The Nimzo Indian ,according to the article scores very well. Switched to this recently myself. Gives a very rich interesting game. A nice balance between tactics and strategy.

I've been burning the midnight oil recently on getting some sort of repertoire against the Reti/English complex. Not an easy task.
