Lately, I've been practicing tactics via chess.emrald.net. When I first started, it helped me alot. Now, It doesn't seem to help me improve. I have studied openings (with Yasser Seirawan's "Winning Chess Openings) and positional play (with Aron Nimzowitche's "My System"- though I haven't completely read through the whole thing).

I just want to know what's a good way to practice. The reason that I think it's about tactics is that I'm still only rated ~1200 USCF.

Just keep doing what your doing, tactics in the best way to improve at your level, when you get around 1600 or 1700 I would recommend Reassess Your Chess by Jeremy Silman for positional play, but reading My System is also good.

Some may disagree, but I think that playing blitz (3 0,5 0) games might improve your ability to spot quickly simple tactical moves. Play a lot and you start to recognize familiar patterns. Reading, studying, analyzing solving tactical problems is good but you need to practice what you learn.

I would go to ChessTactics.com to get free tactics problems. I would read The Amateur's Mind by Jeremy Silman- actually, anything by Silman is helpful. I would play stronger opponents in order to actually pay attention and watch my moves. Play Matt Wilber. lol
