what is the difference between check and checkmate?

Check is when your king is in danger,so will need to do one of the following if possible:
1.Protect-move a piece in front of the king so that way it will not be in danger
2. attack-one of your pieces can capture the piece that is threatening the king
3.Run away-just run away to a safe square
If none of these are possible,then it is a checkmate-you lose
