Btw the diagram should say "Black to Move"
What is the most SURPRISING incident happen with you while playing OTB tourney?
I was in an 8 player RR back in grade school. The guy I had to play in the next round was seated beside me (I don't remember what round it was). He threw up all over his board and my board. He didn't even attempt to get up and go to a trash can. People should throw up more often I guess, because I only lost one game in that 7 round RR.

ImGio is a cheat in touraments - unfortunately this 1200 rated player likes to use a program. Perhaps somoetime Chess.com can find away to stop this, it's B.S

I remember the room was completely silent while people were playing, then suddenly someone shouted "HAHAHAHAHA CHECKMATE I WIN!!!!" breaking the dead silence, then the next thing, his opponent shouted back "WHAT NO IT ISN'T I AM WINNING!!!". Everybody in the room then burst out laughing, and when an arbiter went over to their board, they both started crying because everyone was looking towards them and laughing.
lol
This is pretty embarrassing but whatever.
the position is below. I was playing in a tournament and realized this was a completely lost position. Somehow, I determined that Rc8 was mate. I whispered, "omg, that's checkmate, and I played the move." my opponent looks like he got a heart attack. Until the guy next to me told me that's an illegal move because my rook is pinned to the king. He obviously thought I was an idiot. But my opponent's like "dude, you scared the crap out of me." I felt so bad lol but it was hilarious..and I'm so idiotic haha
But that is a winning position, 1...Rxg2+! 2.Kxg2 b2! And Black wins doesn't he?
I think he drew the board upside down. In his notation, he referred to Rc8+. I think the bottom row of the board in the diagram is meant to be the 8th rank.
I had a similar thing happen, but a bit more surprising. There were a fair number of pieces left on the board, but I was down material and feeling a lot of pressure. I had one move that would checkmate my opponent, but it was his turn, and I didn't think it was likely he would let me play it. Still, we were the two lowest ranked adults in the room, each in the '700s at the time, so I thought there might be a chance he would overlook it.
I was trying to figure out what I would do if he made the obvious move, a pawn move, that would eliminate the checkmate possibility when, to my surprise, he moved his bishop. I boldly moved my rook to the square I had seen and announced "checkmate". He was stunned. He shook hands and congratulated me.
Now comes the surprising part. After shaking hands, he said, "Wait a minute." He then pointed out that my rook was pinned to the king and I had made an illegal move. Now it was my turn to be disappointed, and I went to move the pieces back into place. He stopped me and said that I couldn't. He had shaken hands and accepted the loss, so it was too late to take it back. By the rules, he said it was a loss for him. I insisted that we reset to the position before the illegal move, but he insisted that since he shook hands, it couldn't be called back. I insisted on calling the TD and explaining the situation. The TD listened to the account, and declared me the victor, whether I wanted it or not.
I am a nice guy and don't use much of my opponement's time when he forgets to tap the clock, no matter what the rest of the chess team says to do

Maybe the only funny (and not so surprising) thing that happened in a friendly match. We were playing 30 min for 30 moves. For the rest, we had 3min + 2sec increment. However, we decided to record the blitz part with the camera. My opponent, who moved first, tried to move his rook as ellegant as possible. He did it, but unfortunately he hit his king and king fell down. It was very funny moment, both started laughing and agreed to repeat the blitz part once again. :)

I'm a USCF expert, currently 2062. Back in 2003, while rated 1939, I had my best result ever, beating two masters and losing to one to go 4/5 and tie for first in an five round Swiss open, for a 2397 performance rating. I was playing a lot at the time, and didn't bother to keep keep close track of my rating changes. Not long thereafter, I took an extended break. After I started playing again, one day I looked up my ratings on the USCF web site, and I noticed there were two Michael Coopers from CA. Curious, I clicked on the other one. Oddly, it was a provisionally rated player with only two events and a rating of over 2200. I investigated further, and to my dismay, I found that these two events had actually been played by me, but for some mysterious reason, they had been assigned to a new USCF ID number. I contacted USCF to see if they could change the ratings to reflect the error, but there is a statute of limitations of sorts on these things, and this result was just barely outside the window of what they would change. Sigh!

last year our school 1st time organized a first 5 schol inter school tourney.the rule was every competetor will have to bring a chess board. But i didnt do so.coz i had no board .i alaws practice in comp. So... I was disqualified by the sports teacher. . .but when there was a odd numbr of registrants then the Head master took me .against the wish of sports teacher.3 weeks later when he was delivering the 1st prize to me...then u should had a look to his face.

In 1998 Dos Hermanas tournament I was playing black in a KID against an IM . We had made half a dozen book moves and then he dozed off at the board ! He apparently had been out all night partying and hadnt had any sleep/rest . I could have just let his time expire and win on time but I didnt want to win this way so I woke him up . I also didnt want to win this way because just a couple of nights before we had shared a few beers and played some pool together and become friends . We made a few more moves and he fell asleep again ! I woke him again and offered him a draw and he declined the draw offer ! GM Illescas was observing all this and apparently was friends with my opponent as well .... We made a few more moves and he went back to sleep and now I was getting irritated and didnt know what to do ...... GM Illescas was standing at out board now watching the spectacle.... I looked at him and sort of shrugged and woke my opponent and offered him a draw again... he tried to refuse again but Illescas started speaking to him in Spanish and they had some heated words and then Illescas accepted the draw for him ! LOL He signed the scoresheet and the draw became official ...as I left the playing room they were still speaking in Spanish with one another and sounded a bit heated . Later GM Illescas came to me and told me it was a very nice gesture on my part to give him a draw when I could have just let his time expire . A few days , and rounds, later my opponent came to me and also thanked me for giving him a draw and apologized for appearing at the board in such condition . It was a very unique/memorable experience for me and I do not regret my decision to give him a draw .
