what is the point of playing chess on a board anymore?

I think it is very diferent. A game face to face are likely more serious. When you play in Internet in the house is more hard to disconect of daily chores. Some people play training games with openings that are not well prepared. Others people play only for fun. The times are more fast online, in my opinion this is the main drawback of online play.

For example, I play in an amateur category of catalonian team league and I woke up in the Sunday take the car forgot all the others things and go to the headquarters of the other club or my club and play a game with 90' + 30'' mov with calm and concentration.

ChessOfPlayer

Face to face. Yes. The way a board game should be played for all its benefits. Board game is real chess

Chess boards are a bit dated if you compare them(to digital) from a 'technological' standpoint.
For example, imagine practicing your tactics trainer without a digital board. ha

Indeed Diakonia. Online chess is great for the convenience, but nothing at all beats sitting across from your opponent, touching the pieces, feeling their weight as you life them and place them down again. And online play also keeps you from being as sharp as possible as it might calculate the point totals of captured pieces rather than forcing you to do it on your own (as we should always do to keep ourselves mentally at our best).

Indeed!

OTB you dont run into the "e-thug" like you do online.  You dont experience someone sitting there letting there time run out like you do online.  Being face to face forces you to not act like an A**

Nothing like playing someone you dont know, going over the game, and then getting something to eat, and making a new friend.

Nobody said boards are better for "online tactics training".

The topic is about playinga game of chess, not training for it.

No it isnt.  The topic is "the value" of a physical chess board in today's modern digital world.  The OP has been removed, so I think this thread kinda died a little.

Yes, but the OP was implying that actual boards are outdated to the point of being a horse and buggy and useless. Like I said originally, there is a lot of good things to be done with modern digital technology (such as tactics training) but to completely throw out all physical boards is ridiculous.

I don't think that was his point(even though his OP is gone).  I just thought he was saying, why do i need a physical board, when in reality 99% of chess 'functions' are easier done on a smart device, or PC.

I hear(and see) this a lot with the younger chess players.  They are COMPLETELY absorbed into their smartdevices, and you best believe, it is MUCH easier to learn chess that way(and play it).

Especially with bullet and to a lesser extent blitz, playing on a board is clumsy and could lead to cheating. Also I've watched during board play illegal moves being made and sometimes no one noticing. The board is alright but a smart board is long overdue especially among professional players.

Strong and professional players have a knack of noticing cheating and illegal moves all by themselves.. And that bullet chess can't be played well on a board I consider a plus.

Part of the charm of OTB chess is that you are disconnected from technology for once.

really the only point of playing chess is meeting new people)))))))) otherwise its a waste of money and time but time is money ))

I see no point to play on a board. I don't understand why people still do it. It's too much work playing on a real board, setting up and putting pieces away when you are done. Also you see the person you are playing against. Then they will want to talk to you. UGH meeting new people and talking to them is the absolute worst. I'd much rather stay at home by myself. So i say it is pointless to play on a real board.

I thought you were being serious until about halfway through your post. Then I realized you were being sarcastic. Well done!

It takes so long to set up the pieces! Anybody who complains about that has truly let the digital age complete the process of making them completely lazy.
