what is this whole "carlsen plays like a computer" nonsense

While I believe the person mentioning autism was simply trolling, I also think his comment DID have a small bit of merit (albeit unintentional on his part). I've heard of many instances of high functioning autism making a person extraordinarily adept at a certain function, be it math, art... or even chess. They can give your "normal" person a real run for their money in their "gifted" subject, because their mind is functioning at a different level and in certain cases that different level means a much more advanced (and even simplified) understanding of the subject. I don't think Carlsen is autistic, but don't knock autism because there really are people out there who are gifted in certain fields despite being diagnosed as autistic.

I always had my suspicians that Magnus was not human but rather an advanced version of Houdini. Lets see his birth certicate.

As a cat I am by definition autistic. My gifted subject is being super FANCY!

It's not much cuddling between you and your owner then.

Now we know where Kramnik actually is when he says he has to take a bathroom break duing a WCC match.

Carlsen is not like us. He is smarter, and he has a tremendeous memory. He can rememeber all the games he have read or played.  He must have played a lot computeregames too, and that will give him some computerrepertoir.

It's a statement by anand, nothing more.

And Anand having lost I think would say that to minimize his defeat.  It is now an accepted fact that computers are superior to the human at chess so to draw a parallel between Carlsen and a Computer is basically Anand making an excuse for his being bested.  To me its a slight trying to robotize Carlsen.

Hey at least Anand stopped sniffling long enough to say something to the press lol... Surprised his glasses weren't all fogged up...

Try again o' troll extraordinaire...

Here is an excellent case in point about people (or in this case a troll) parroting what they've heard with absolutely zero evidence to back them up.

I understand listening is becoming a lost art, but give it a try. With Carlsen it would be fantasy to hear anything other than a thoughtful, well-spoken, intelligent young man. Autistic? Because he plays chess well? LOL.

I can't speak for whether anyone is or isn't a troll, but in interviews, I think claims of autism or at least borderline autism/Asperger's may have sound footing.  Carlsen clearly isn't a guy very good at communicating feelings or ideas, yet is freakishly capable of executing nonhuman logic over the 64.

I say the idea has credence, at least.  I'd like to hear what those who speak Norwegian and have heard him interviewed in it say.  Might just be a language barrier, but he's certainly not conversant in English.

I don't know about that, but it is likely his brain activity is rather different from most "normal" people. I saw a documentary recently in which iirc he admitted to thinking about chess most of the time, even when speaking to the interviewer.

Strongly doubt whether the statement being attributed to Anand was actually said by him or with any intention of justifying the result. The fact is that Carlsen played an awful lot of moves that were the first choice of the top engines. It either shows that he did extensive preparation with the engines or his style of playing is the air-tight kind by computers where the computer's goal is not only to win the game but to be ahead of the opponent "at every stage of the game". Except Game-3 where Carlsen seemed threatened, he played every game where he was marginally ahead of Anand at the end of every move ... espeially as per the 3 engines. Which brings to ask the ultimate question - Did Anand play into Carlsen's hands by letting Carlsen dictate the style of play? Or did Anand's flamboyant tactical play just couldn't break the mathematical certainty that was Carlsen's defense. If Anand-carlsen was a fight between Neo and Agent Smith who'd be who?

He is autistic, he confirmed it himself in an interview...

http://www.nettavisen.no/sjakk/article1599185.ece confirmed by himself here.

Certainly enough he has none of the typical reactions of an autistic- say like the Czech super-GM David Navara (an absolutely lovely guy, by the way).
