Double Muzio. The most popular line for black has been refuted.
What is your favorite chess opening?

My favorite opening is e4, but I think you mean favorite defense.
That would be the King's Indian--it's the only defense I feel confident in when I play people rated over 2200 USCF OTB. But I like and play the French, too.

Too impractical to keep track of them all, but as white I like Queen's Gambit setups and as black Queen's Indians and Paulsen Sicilians. Though now I'm working on open games since they're recommended for learning.

King's Indian against people that good?! White usually has an easier time finding plans especially if he gets a firm grip over e5. If white doesn't overextend with an over ambitious pawn center (c4,d4,e4,f4) then he should be alright. Fischer was notorious for being able to crack those.

The KID (like the French) requires a "feel" for the position--you either play them well or you don't. They're not for everybody. But with the KID, black basically accepts a near-fatal space advantage for white in the center and the q-side, so black can't wait in attacking or count pieces while doing it. After all, does it matter if you lose in 80 moves or 30? Since you are almost lost from move 3, you have to realize that material really doesn't matter here, and that the intiative is everything. If you can't play with that attitude, the KID may not be right for you.

Almost lost from move 3 in the KID? Hardly...
My favorite openings are the Sicilians and Kings Indians from both sides, I also like playing the white side of the Nimzo and English/Reti stuff as white.

Yeah I tried the KID before and it didn't work out too great. Almost lost? Is it really that bad? I still do alright with the Leningrad Dutch though, that typically has fun games but you gotta know what you're doing. Even white has to take care not to plug up the weak e6 square with dubious maneuvers like Ng5?-h6-Ne6-B/Nxe6-dxe6 neutralizing the weak diagonal and making the pawn a target. Though that's relatively rare since people who memorize that much in the Leningrad as white know better than that.

Yeah Nimzo-Larsen is pretty fun, either 1.b3 or with a preliminary 1.Nf3.

I meant Nimzo-Indian, but I also like playing the Nimzo-Larsen as well. I usually play 1.Nf3 2.b3 though.

David Bronstein wrote, "It is more dangerous for black to play the King's Indian than for white to play the King's Gambit." Since he re-wrote much of the theory of both, I tend to think that he knows what he's talking about. It's very dangerous for black to play the KID, but the point is it isn't lost, just dangerous. But if black does not play with energy, white just rolls him on the q-side. The space advantage you concede on the third move is substantial, and in the hands of a good player can quickly crush black. You have to be able to do something about that if you're going to be successful in the KID.
I like the French opening... But what is YOUR favorite opening and WHY??
