Endgames are a good way to see pawns and knights in action.
Pushing your pawns always puts pressure on your opponent. But that also means the opponent will desperately attack your pawns; Knights on dark squares will always jump to light squares on their next move. That means you need to be mindful of color complexes.

Why do you assume the gender of the rest? The pawns aren't just male cannon fodder, they can be whatever you want them to be.

My favorite chess pieces are the knight and the pawn.
Why?
The knight can jump in a unique pattern no other piece can move, and, it can jump over pieces.
The pawn can be promoted to a, Bishop, Knight, Rook, or Queen!
