Topalov is 4. Morphy (0) - Owen (1) - Maroczy (2) - Arturo Pomar Salamanca (3) - Topalov (4). Moreover, Topa beat Pomar, Pomar beat Maroczy, Maroczy beat Owen, and Owen did score a victory over Morphy (although he mostly lost to Paul).
Well I've played a handful of OTB tournament games against an FM who played Fischer, and so add two to whatever the shortest path from Morphy to Fischer is. I guess I could ask the guy what other famous American players he's played but it doesn't make all that much difference to me what my Morphy number is.
