I do know that after one tournament they said his rating (level of play) had briefly exceeded 3000.

I have my doubts about that, Jeff Sonas ranks the greatest tournament performances (he doesn't use the Elo system with which Karpov's Linares 1994 was a 2977 performance) at http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=5828

ok, but for fabelhaft I found the article written in chess.com a few years back by Bill Wall, and I copy the paragraph:

"Highest performance rating.  Bobby Fischer had the highest performace rating of 3080 when he defeated Bent Larsen by the score of 6-0.  In the 2007 Candidates matches, Gata Kamsky had a 3047 performance rating after defeating Etienne Bacrot (rated 2709) with 3 wins and a draw.  In 1989, Sofia Polgar had a peformance rating of over 2900 when she scored 8.5 out of 9 in an international tournament in Rome."

Performance ratings get a bit weird in matches though. Kamsky's beating Bacrot turns into a better performance than anything Kasparov or Karpov ever did, even if no one thinks Kamsky played 3047 chess against Bacrot or that he ever could reach such an Elo performance in a tournament.
