I would like to start a new thread concerning what positive people should say about chess. Instead of focusing on the silly or the negative, let us please concentrate on the benefits, the merits, the advantages of learning and playing chess. So, Basically, I'm looking for intelligent comments, personal stories, funny situations that deal with our great love, art, science and sport! I'm not looking for controversy - if your are on this site, I must presume that you like chess - so why do you like it?

Chess makes kids smarter!

I like chess because winning makes me feel like a big man. But losing makes my feel like a small man. Draws make me feel like medium-sized man.

Though I've never become very strong, nor had the time to go to tournaments often, I enjoy reading about the history of chess and its personalities.  Going through a tournament book while replaying the best games and reading about the race for the prize is superior to watching an old sports film.  We can recreate the games in a way that permits very personal involvement.

And the resonance of its evolution in the light of contemporaneous historical events gives chess history a special attraction for me.

Chess forces you to think ahead. It forces you to consider risk reward. It teaches you that there is a correct way of doing things to acheive success. It teaches you what it takes to master something new and how to study and research to acheive success. Chess will keep your ego in check. Ok I missed a lot of things how about this story many of you have also experienced I am sure as I did.

I am 62 years old had played rated tournaments 35 years ago however had not played at all for 20 years at least. I got married a few years ago and my (super intellegent) new brother in law asked me if I played chess. I replied yes I have played. He asked if I was any good at it and I replied I was ok. I was so afraid of his gigantic intellect LOL that I did not want to give anything away. I asked him if he was any good and he replied very confidently that he could tell me one thing if we played it would be a forgone conclusion. If we plaw I will beat you!

At this point something in the far back reaches of my mind became re activated as clear as if it were just yesterday. Like I was playing chess everyday and studying one of my 50 chess books:) and playing in rated tournaments. We set down at the board and I picked up 2 pawns held my hands out for him to pick a hand to draw color. He said whats that? I wondered if he was trying to fake me out but I decided no he can't be. He said take the color you want it won't make any difference. I took white gee what a suprise, who would have thought if you have a choice you would take white. I opened and played the Colle System something I really know in depth and it lasted about 17 moves. The Colle is a bit slow but of course I won. He has never asked me to play again. Don't get me wrong I like the guy but that game taught him to keep his ego in check LOL

Chess is an amazing game. Although it was meant for war strategy, it opens the mind to different ways of thinking. Everyone should learn to play chess.

This is great! I'm reading all your positive comments, very well articulated and inspiring! I think it is important to state and to remeember all the good chess is doing for people. For example, watching the movie The Knights of the Bronx gives you many insights on what happens when adults communicate their passion for chess to youngsters who use chess to get out of poverty, delinquency and misery. Chess can give hope for a better future. I have many students who now like school because they are part of the chess club and compete in tournaments. They experience success and this builds their self-esteem and confidence. We start teaching in kindergarden and continue through grade twelve. My son and daughter heve gotten great jobs decause of thei chess experiences.
