What Pieces Can You Lose Without Resigning?

Are there pieces that, when lost, basically end you're game? What are they? Are you willing to sacrifise them under any circumstances?

Depending on the level of the players, losing any piece for no compensation could be a almost guaranteed loss.

And of course, I'd happily give up any for a mating attack.

the king apparently (or maybe the Queen's knight pawn)

Sac. everything in the name of mate.

Totally agree, all depends on the position:

If I lose a pawn, I'll resign when... it's a dead lost endgame or late middlegame.

If I lose a bishop or knight, I'll resign... unless my position still has some life in it.

If I lose a rook, I'll resign... unless there's an immediate mate or decisive mating attack.

If I lose a queen, I'll resign... unless it's checkmate.

Never resign, that's foolish.  Instead, go for stale mate.  End game tactics.

only if next move is odviouse mate but i would still go for  it.

People often think they should resign on the spot when they lose a minor piece. Maybe for GMs -- I'm not in their world, but due to some prior experiences losing even a full piece is not enough for me to resign right away. Frankly I'd probably play on even down a queen for a while, just to make sure that my opponent remembers that he has to actually do something with that queen to make it count.

livluvrok

I try not to resign unless the game is totally hopeless, so I would try not to resign just becuase you lose a piece, even if it's a major one.

Like most things it depends on the position.  You can't evaluate a position by counting pieces.
