What psychological trick do you use when playing OTB?

make them forfeit if they are down more than five points in pieces

well, only if they remain down more than five points for two full turns.

I like to hover my hand over a random piece, and right before I touch it Ill switch my hand to the actual piece I'm moving

Also, adjust you opponents pieces so that they are in the centre of the square after each of their moves. They will get very mad and probably blunder

Do not offer hand. Laughing

I like to cough, then lick my pieces before moving them. It seems to inhibit captures.

athota

when in doubt, sac your queen!

Jadulla

I act really confused and anxious so that they get overconfident

Sit your opponent with the sun in his eyes.  -  1561  -  Ruy Lopez

I am ashamed to confess this but in a friendly OTB with an old friend I kept muttering "bishop" or "knight" under my breath every three moves or so. I kid you not, he eventually started laughing and lost his focus.

True story.

in casual otb you can do everything you want... it is supposed to be fun.

I would drive one crazy with saying "...and now the new star move" to almost every move.

You know those guys who dont release a piece, they screw it int the square?

I just say j'adoube, and unscrew them again.

I played against quite a few who "screw" pieces never knew why they did that. I just found it funny.

Weird, I've never seen anyone do that playing chess, but I work in a casino, and I see people do that all the time with their bets, like they think that's going to stop me taking the bet if it loses.

i dont do anything. i just play.

NightKingx

I slighly knock the table exactly every minute. After 10 minutes, I start doing it every 2 minutes. My opponent's brain doesn't realize and thinks I am still doing it every minute, so he invest 2 minutes thinking in moves that he would actually invest only 1. So he is investing twice the time. At the end, I win on time or because time pressure.

I'm happy for chess to be about chess, not about me trying to 'fight' with another human creature.

I come up in a state of absolute drunkeness.

one showed up to a game in his hand he had a bottle of vodka and he kept taking a sip of the bottle. the opponent thought he was way past drunk and couldn't take the game seriously and lost. the content of the bottle was water and he just acted drunk.

I found this trick so funny, eventhough it's a cheap one

I try to make good moves. That always annoys the opponent.
