What's up with the next World Championship being two years away?

This is the first WC I've followed, so forgive my ignorance. I noticed they said that the next championship will take place in exactly two years.

Is it not annual?

Back in the day it was once every 3 years!

Carlsen won and defended his title 2 years in a row against Anand, and now FIDE seems to have settled on the 2 year cycle.  I think it should be annual if they are going to stick to the 12 game format.

It's always been once every 2 years since 2013 I think

Weird. It seems like the championship should be every year, like the Superbowl. Though I do recognize that putting on an event that lasts nearly a month is a bit different from putting on an event that lasts only a day.

I prefer the two year cycle. Makes the match more significant.

To me it should be three years, 24 games, no rematch if the champion loses though.

Me also like the old format of every 3 years and playing 24 games. I don't want to see all the top players rotating the title and we have almost all of them with an ex-world champion title. It should be rare winning such a title. And don't compare it to super bowl, just compare it to the soccer World Cup; we wait 4 years for such an event and I doubt if we have it every year that we will follow it as we do now

If they gonna "cheapen" the WCC by allowing rapid tiebreakers to decide the title, might as well make it a yearly event. 12 games is too short.
