Does anyone have any ideas?
What should I do if someone is a bad sport?

You did the right thing :) If you feel like this is becoming a habitual situation or isn't being solved by blocking the member, feel free to send in a ticket.

He had a mate in two, it would not have hurt him to play those moves.

Unfortunately Chess attracts its share of bad sports & idiots. You have the right to play out to Mate if you want. I am teaching my 14 year old daughter & have told her to play every game to Mate until she reaches a level where it may not be necessary. If you ignor your opponents bad sportsmanship it may just upset them into a blunder so I say play it out. You have the moral high ground here so stick to it & don't be tempted to retaliate or sink to their level
Best of luck

Just thought I would share this experience to show how far bad sportsmanship can go. I was playing in a Qualifying Tournament for the State Championship many years ago. I had blundered a strong position & lost a piece but I had a good chance of salvaging a draw by perpetual check. A guy on the board next to me picked up a piece then replaced it & moved another. His opponent challenged the move & the guy threw a fit about it. The Tournament Referee was called & declared the game forfeit & banned the offender from the rest of the tournament. That was the correct call ..... but I was the real loser. I had 5 moves to play in 2 minutes to reach the 60 minute time control in a very complex position. I made a wrong move & eventually lost the game. Post game analysis showed I did have a draw but I missed the key move due to the scene going on at the next board. I placed 2nd in the Tournament by 1/2 a point.
So I lodged a complaint which lead to the offender being banned from all future tournament play. I found out he had done this before. My game was analyzed but the result was not changed (I did not dispute that call, I couldn't prove that I could have definitely drawn the game considering the time pressure)
The was a sequel to all that which involved a confrontation in a car park before another tournament. The banned guy accused me of ruining his chance of becoming Australian Champion. I suggested the Australian Checkers Championship might be a more appropriate choice. I blocked the ensuing punch with a motorcycle helmet & ... well we don't need to go there, but as far as I know he never played Tournament Chess again.
So that's a side of Chess we can all do without but it seems there will always be bad sports & we need to know how to deal with them.

My opponent told me that he was going to play until just before the fifty move rule. There is always the chance that he could miscount. And seriously, does it take much time or effort to make two moves? By the way it doesn't matter what my rating is (I am higher than a strong beginner), and even lower rated people can ask reasonable questions.

Doesn't matter much what you see (eg. that your opponent can mate you in two moves and has suggested perhaps you'd care to resign), as your opponent may not 'see' the mate or is uncertain if it will work (looks good, but you might well slip out of it in practice).
I agree, it's just two moves and normally since there's so few moves left I'd play it through. Perhaps every tenth game, my opponent blows it and I manage to slip out from under a 'sure thing'.

Is this the game with a rook and a pawn vs. a queen and several pawns? If so, you should resign. There is no good reason to continue. You are playing on either out of spite or ignorance.

You cannot escape morons on the internet, no matter where you go, but you can refuse to let them ruin your day.
Couldn't have said it better

you are the one that lodged a complaint about a guy that had nothing to do with your game. what kind of person lodges a complaint against somebody that they don't even know or played against. He had every right to get mad at you since it was your complaint that banned him from all tournament play. Then you insult him by mentioning 'checkers championship' Are you for real?
Like you said you couldn't prove that you would have made the right move in the time pressure. It is nice to blame your loss on another person or event, isn't it? Basically your complaint did nothing except ban the guy and didn't effect the outcome of your game or your place in the tournament.

You have the right to not resign. But your opponent also has the right to move pieces aimlessly, promote his remaining pawns to knights, etc...
And in my opinion you have no right to complain.

I was in this position very recently in an online game, but I was on the winning side. My opponent miscalculated in the endgame and allowed me to get the opposition and a passed pawn. Plus, my bishop was covering the queening square. There was NO WAY he could possibly win or even draw the position. Hey, with 3 days per move, I'm not going to suddenly stalemate him.
Now, he had every right in the world to play on. If he wanted me to bring him to checkmate, that's fine with me. But all of a sudden, as soon as the game was truly lost, this formerly prompt and punctual person--who had been making two or three moves per day--started taking up almost the entire time to make one move. He would wait until there were 2 or 3 hours remaining in the time control, and then he'd move. I'd instantly reply, and then he'd wait 70 hours to make his next move.
That is truly being an ass.

In regards to QxN's complaint, I think he had the perfect right to complain about someones behaviour even if he wasnt playing him.
Where does it state in any regulations that you may only complain about your direct opponent ?
If I were playing in a tournament and another player was creating a lot of noise and commotion I doubt I would be the only one to complain.
I also doubt if it was QxN's single complaint that got him banned. More likely the accumulation of compaints from his previous displays of stupidity , which made whatever body that decided to ban him, conclude that his behaviour was just not fair on other players.
Also to blame QxN for his being banned from tournament chess is ridculous. His behaviour was clearly not on and it appears he had a pattern of it, and HE is resposible for his behaviour, not QxN
he filed the complaint, he got the guy banned. of course somebody is responsible for his own behavior. but to file a complaint after the match is a over, a complaint that has no impact on your actual result but which gets a guy that you didn't play or even know banned and then to insult his intelligence by sugesting a checkers championship is a bad move. I don't know if QueentakesKnight expects us to sympathize with him but I am not sympathizing with a snitch that insults the intelligence of the guy he snitched on, lol.

I was just asking what to do... I ended up blocking him. I am moving quickly. It was mainly the chat that was bothering me...
You've done the right thing: whenever you feel even slightly wronged or disrespected by someone on the internet it is appropriate to whine, moan, bitch, and complain about it by starting a thread on a forum.
Ouch! (I laughed!)
>>>>>Is this the game with a rook and a pawn vs. a queen and several pawns? If so, you should resign.
Or is it the one where you have a bare K against a Queen, a Bishop and a pawn which is about to Queen? I can understand your opponents being annoyed when you're wasting their lives away playing on in these positions. Why do you do that?
I do not condone what you say he is doing in the slightest but why on earth don't you do the decent thing and resign these games? Then start new, worthwhile games.
Someone I am playing in one of my team match games is not being a good sport. The person asked if I was going to resign, and when I said that I would play on (which I mostly do) he started yelling about me having bad ettiquite and threatening to extend the game for a year (He had mate in 2, but he moved another piece even though he even say it). He said that when all the games were finished he would tell my teamates what a bad sport I was. What should I do? I already blocked him and disabled chat. Is this serious enough to report? He just moved again...
