what should I do the player always use his vacation!

NormaJean: I'd say that the only real problem I have with your gripe is that not all paying members abuse like this - only the ones who are actually saved by the autotimeout protection, and then don't resign the game immediately after. Thus I don't think it's unethical to pay for an account - only to use this feature, which provides an unfair advantage.

Also, for another time, I must remind people: do not compare this to OTB. It is comparable to Correspondance, Live Chess is comparable to OTB, and this comes into play big-time when talking about issues of time.

Ask him where he has gone on vacation to.

Track him down.

Kill him.

I vote for doing away with vacation time altogether. So what if you're traveling? Internet access is nearly ubiquitous. And with these 3- and 5-day time limits, if you can't find 5 minutes to log on and make a move, you deserve to lose.

Burchgsb: That is a salient point. Perhaps you should start a group, where people can join and play knowing most would use the auto vacation (how does that work anyway?). Then you are happy and you dont subject others unnecessary stress and coronaries.

So let me follow your logic: we don't know peoples intentions of using the vacation time so don't get too excited translates into a group that uses vacation all the time...huh?...the pendulum swings too far sometimes...

Before you moan and whinge about time out/vacation. perhaps you should consider why a person has to use his/her vacation time. I have just discovered that I have cancer and I have been in hospital for major surgery. My treatment is making me feel extremely ill and some days I just cannot play (although playing is my salvation at times) so I have to rely on auto vacation to save my games. Other people on this site have troubles too, so you should maybe think yourself lucky that its not you that has to use all your vacation time because of illness or trouble. Just show some consideration to others, especially when you don't know why......

I've just asking for opinion , I'm very sory if that happen to you.  The player that I'm talking about you know he's online for a couple of hours and then he didn't make a move and suddenly he used vacation despite of so much time he has, then after a day he sign in again and make a move ( we have 2 games) but the other he will not and use vacation again, so what do you feel if it will happen to you, he always do that,  I don't want to judge people what the reason doing this, may be just like you said they had a valid reason,  well I guess I have to concentrate to game despite of that...thanks for the comment.

tried this approach. it doesn't work.  the dead bastard didn't log back in.  i had to sit through the rest of his frigging vacation before he timed out.... this was so inconvenient for me.  i won't do that again.

Well, I'm a paying member. I didn't become a paying member because of automatic time-out protection (I didn't even know it existed), I did so because I wanted to use more of the learning tools available on the site. My paying status has never saved me from a game timing out. And I've turned off my automatically claim a victory on time in my settings because I don't really want to win because somebody didn't make a move in time.

That said, it does bug a bit when somebody take vacation in a fast paced tournament, especially when they don't give any indications how long they will be gone. But as others have said, there are many reasons people may be on vacation, so I deal with it by starting another game with others.

Indeed. I've never used auto-timeout protection principally because I think it IS unfair. Others will argue that they pay for it, so should be free to use it and, since it is within the rules of the site then they are technically correct, but I agree with normajeanyates in that it makes for an uneven playing field.

normajeanyates said: I said: "The paid members among you whining people are perpetual abusers, by definition of auto-timeout."

I don't agree that this follows by definition, because the definition presumes that all paying members who complain about vacation abuse use the auto-timeout facility. If they did then they would indeed be hypocritical, but if they don't then they have a legitimate right to air their grievances and not be called "perpetual abusers". If this was not the meaning of the statement then it was either an ill-formed statement because it implied such a meaning or else was calculated to generate a retort such as this, in which case it succeeded.

Vacation abuse should be dealt with by starting other games, setting up conditional moves and learning to be patient. If you suspect foul play then use the report abuse link at the bottom of the page.

Yeah, I'll remember when I'm camping or when my campus internet shuts down that I "deserve to lose".  Real fair.

Certain people abuse all the time.  If you have a problem w/ a particular player all the time, you should post it, and let people decide whether they want to play against that person.  Maybe boycotting the cheaters/abusers is an answer.  They can't cheat/abuse if they can't get a game.

I don't think the staff is ok with public naming of individuals.

Everybody seems so stressed nowadays!

If only there were a way to convince the staff here that discussions of vacation & resignation etiquette/abuse somehow qualify as religious or political debate...
