What should one's average opponent be?

What rating should your average opponent be compared to your own? 200 points below yours? 100 points below yours? The same? Higher? I'm just curious to see what people's responses will be. What is your average opponent rated? Either in quick, blitz, long or online.

Nytik

Mine's currently >200 points lower than my actual rating, but I'm hoping that the AOR will soon become a moving average and then this problem shall no longer occur.

I don't care at all what my AOR is. I play some games because people challenge me and they seem pleasant enough. I play other games because I am in tournaments.

Maybe it matters more for non-titled players?

Heejo

to me neither but thats also because ratings usually dont say much on this website

Dexter_Morgan

My AOR is roughly 300 points beneath my rating at 1952.  It's about to drop though as I've just started to enter tournaments.  If I'm playing somebody with a similar rating to myself, but has an AOR of say 1450... I know I'm probably going to get an easy win if the player's rating is established.  Simply because their rating is most likely inflated from cherry picking weaker opponents, which happens a lot here.

I don't think there is a fair estimate of what it "should be" though.  If the stronger players like Ozzie stressed out about their AOR, they wouldn't enter most of the tournaments here... and that wouldn't be good.

CPawn

The rating dosnt matter...if i put out a challenge and it is accecpted i play the game.  my rating doesnt define who or what i am.  But if you want to improve your game, then you should play people 200+ points better than your rating.

conman1000

My average opponent is 90 points under my current ranking, the problem is, is now my rating is getting a lot higher, and my average opponent is moving becuase of the amount of games I've played.

wormrose

What is AOR?

I try to choose opponents plus or minus 100 points of my current rating. But often the opponents choose me just for friendly (but still rated) games.

Average Opponent Rating.

Scarblac

If it were under my control, I'd like it to be 50-100 points above my own rating.

But given tournaments et cetera, it's not under my control, so whatever.

People use AOR to help determine the true strength of the opponent. Basically it's a shortcut to doing the "real work" of going through that opponent's games.

Heejo

it's not perfect tough seeming its hard to controll who you get to play people can be much stronger and weaker than there average opponent rating

Your opponents average rating will probably be higher if you are low rated or lower if you have a high rating. e.g. If you are rated 1000, in the bottom 3%, then of course your average opponent rating must be higher. If a high rated player plays coaching or friendly games, accepting all challenges, then his opponent average rating must be lower.

In Conclusion... It don't mean much!

lol... Since you have a 600 point rating advantage over your average opponent, would that mean that you are an easy win? Probably not! It is more indicative that you are in the top 99% and play with those you can.

For my long games on this site, I set my seeks to only accept from people above a rating 150-200 below my own and up.  It's harder to find intermediate players then beginning players so I try not to be too restrictive.  With long games I want to improve my chess, so I try to avoid having to play weaker players.

For blitz games though I don't care who I play since I'm just doing it to blow off steam or have a little fun, and I'll usually play almost anyone.
