I take omega-3 and go for walks/light exercise. Keeps me healthy and awake!

I'm trying to quit coffee, you get too addicted over time and all it does for you after years of use is making you feel miserable whenever you haven't had your daily dose. Caffeine for someone who isn't already addicted might work as a supplement just during a tournament.

As for sports type supplement, well yes those work. I have some pills with caffeine (200mg), therobomine (200mg), and methylhexanamine (geranium, 100mg) that really makes you feel alert and concentrated, but I've been careful with using it too much as geranium is reported to have some disturbing side effect, however rare.

Thanks, good advice and yes, moderation is also very  important

Beta blockers are illegal under FIDE doping rules.

You are a cheater. You should be banned for two years.

Why do you need to take performance enhancers? Just do headstand or other inversion posture to send more blood to the brain. Follow Magnus Carlsen.

I have tried that but they won't let me take one of those frames in the picture into the tournament hall and I can't do handstands.

I have Parkinsons - so thanks for your discussion guys. I get very shaky when under pressure of any sort, especialy when playing live chess on line. So bad that I can't hold the mouse still enough to centre on a piece, twice I have lost my queen this way. In what must seem to my opponent as a very stupid move.

So a beta blocker is of great interest -- can tou name some brands that contain this/?

I am not a great player (my score tekk the story), but I am sure I would do better if I could just settle down nd relax

Edit: Did not notice the illegal part, guess I should ask my doctor

Which is your national federation that doesn't implement anti-doping rules?

Yes ,you need to talk to a doctor first but it is very easy to obtain and it should be able to help you a lot.

FIDE can't even get it together to ban Ivanov and they are worried about Beta blockers? I couldn't care less about using something that is going to calm my nerves. Is there a ban on meditation or camomile tea? Nothing can make you a better player, beta blockers simply allow me to perform at the best of my natural ability ,how is that a problem?

It doesn't matter what you think, using a banned substance in tournament play is breaking the rules and therefore cheating. If you aren't playing under an organization like FIDE or similar one with such a ban, go ahead. But many here do and therefore shouldn't use them.

I don't have specific supplements that I take for chess but I am health orientated and eat dark chocolate, teas rich in antioxidants, take daily vitimins, and in general eat a diet rich in antioxidants and circulatory health.i don't take omega supplements but my diet includes foods with them like eggs, avocados for example. The whole body is important but I generally view the heart and brain as the "soul" of your vitality so I am keen on keeping both in good health and function.

I use Beta Blockers all the time when playing OTB. It prevents adrenaline from being released and lowers your heart rate allowing you to relax and really play your A game and not slip up due to tension. Lots of performers etc. use it and it really works.

I used to drink coffee as well to keep my mind focused but now I have hit on a very good system. I start drinking pre-workout sport supplements about two weeks before a tournament. They are loaded with caffeine but also tend to make you very energetic ,making it impossible to sit still. However after about  10 days of constant use this effect starts to wear off and you are left with the benefits of the high caffeine content only, keeping you really sharp.

I have a few more aces up my sleeve but I am wondering what other players use before or during an OTB tournament.

Beta blockers can kill you! Here's what Dr. Mercola says about them:

I know Adderall is great for competitive gaming. Personally, I sip green tea constantly when doing something stressfull.

That fide anti-doping list is ridiculous.  It looks like they just took the banned substances list from the Olympic Committee (athletic olympics, not chess olympiads).  I mean, ritalin and adderall aren't even on there and those are the ones that I would think FIDE would want to ban the most (I understand they are covered under amphetamines, but I would think FIDE would want to specifically mention them).

Not to mention that many of the substances on that list do not improve chess performance in any way, and an average joe recreational fitness enthusiast is going to be on a number of them at any given time.

WanderingPuppet

would not suggest medications as i know that in different people they have different, even opposite effects.

i take a vitamin d supplement and flaxseed oil capsule daily (for omega-3s)

And basically anything Dr Mercola says, you should do the opposite.

Sure, that´s just because FIDE want to be included on the Olympic Games.

In another topic, Adderal is an amphetamin, but Ritalin is not.

So, it should be added specifically to the anti-doping list.

Reminds me of Ivanchuk being harrassed for drug test sample

I don't take anything, I like it the natural way. That said, coffee and excersize are a part of my existance. :)
