There's a lot of good advice here. I've had good results with thinking about how to improve my pieces, ensuring that I have a good understanding of the position, making that sure I haven't missed any important tactical considerations, and resting a bit so that I can be fresh when my opponent makes his/her move. I don't do any deep calculating when it's my opponent's turn, unless I really find it necessary. I don't want to waste time on lines that won't appear--but if there's a critical line that I'd better explore right then, I will do that.
