Learn some of the more popular openings, at least 5 or 6 moves deep so that you get off to a good start in the game.  Ruy Lopez, Nimzo-Indian, Queen's Gambit Declined, English Opening, Sicilian Defense, Reti.

Learn the Philidor Position (Rook and King versus Rook, King and pawn) where the weaker side draws and there's another position where one side has King, Rook and pawn with a winning position against King and Rook.  It came to me now-it is the Lucena Position.

Learn the "pawn pointing concept" for the middlegame where if White has pawns on e4 and d5 against black pawns on e5, d6 and c7 then White mainly tries to play on the queenside and Black mainly tries to play on the kingside.  That happens a lot with the King's Indian Defense.
