Best advice:

If you must eat something before a game, at least take Beano and they'll be no gas.  Sorry this is a serious thread I shouldn't joke around.

Do u use to have gas when u play?

Yes and that's my plan Smile.

I think one or more of you mentioned this in different words........I think it was Bobby Fischer but I may be incorrect....some grandmaster said, "SIT ON YOUR HANDS!!) in other words, don't be so hasty to make your next move....think first!!! another very helpful piece of advice, coming from my opponent right here at chess.com......THINK DEFENSE FIRST!! It's so easy to get caught up in "your plan" and completely forget you hae an opponent!!

this may not seem like a chess advice but it is:

stay in shape, start exercising.

BirdsDaWord

Bobby, that is VERY smart advice.  No endurance = BAD

netzach

It helps (physical-fitness).

Does not mean however that being physically-fit is going to make you a 'whizz' at chess. Is much more to it than that.

Nah, if they threaten to take my king, I threaten em to a wrestling match - problem solved Laughing

When you find a good move, look for a better one.

Have fun

"Long variation, wrong variation." You have to be able to calculate the first 2 half moves with precision. You can't overlook a response on the 2nd half move and expect to survive.

Larsen said that he does never believe in long variants.

It is no surprise that he did not become WC.

I challenge them to a shooting match.  It's convincing when you can hit the bulls-eye from 100 feet away every time with a .22 rifle.  Laughing

this is my own advice. be alert and look on both sides of the board. get your opponents out of opening theory and lastly dont rush. for white, i suggest akobian's system against grunfeld and KID which is 1. d4 1. nf6 2. c4 2. g6 3. nc3 3. bg7 4. bg5 followed by e3 and nf3

schlechter55

1.d4 Nf6, 2.c4 g6, 3.Nc3 d5, 4.cxd5 Nxd5, 5.e4 Nxc3, 6.bxc3 c5, 7.Bg5 Bg7, 8.Rc1 is interesting, too.
