I don't know what is the name in English but the name in French is "Maître contre amateur" from Max Euwe and Walter Maiden.

GM Patrick Wolff's The Complete Idiot's Guide to Chess.

The Complete Chessplayer, byt Fred Reinfeld.

Even now, 38 years after I first started reading it, it brings back memories.

I'm pretty sure that would be Chess Master vs. Chess Amateur.

The first book I read was The Art of Chess but I forget the author.  The first I bought for myself was Karl Marx Plays Chess by Andrew Soltis

Can't remember my very first chess book but probably something by Fred Reinfeld.  I still wouldn't mind having copies of his books 1000 Checkmates and 1000 Combinations.

Good books and interesting stories.

First book I ever read was "How to think ahead in chess" by Horowitz and Reinfeld. The edition I had didn't have chess diagrams, rather they set the positions up on a chess set and printed the photographs. Objectively, it was a terrible book, but I learnt a lot from it.

Common Sense in Chess by Emmanuel Lasker followed by 1001 Winning Combinations by Reinfeld.

How to Win in the Chess Openings by Horowitz was my first.  I found an old copy of it on my father's girlfriend's shelf.  From the second I saw it, I made it mine!!  20 years later, it still sits in my chess library.

I wish I knew precisely. It was my great uncle's and I read it in 1959 when I was 10. All I remember is that it had basic motifs and ended with games from a Horowitz-Reshevsky US Championship match which Reschevsky won.
