How to win in the chess endings by Horowitz -- was my Dad's.
What was your first chess book?
the first book i purchased, and did not get to read: pawn power by hans kmoch. it was recommended.
but then some how i got a hold of yasser seirawans winning chess series... primarily, strategy and tactics.
read them both while in class in middle school.
i thought they were great books. atleast to start.
thanks,
charles
I don't know what is the name in English but the name in French is "Maître contre amateur" from Max Euwe and Walter Maiden.
The Complete Chessplayer, byt Fred Reinfeld.
Even now, 38 years after I first started reading it, it brings back memories.

I'm pretty sure that would be Chess Master vs. Chess Amateur.
The first book I read was The Art of Chess but I forget the author. The first I bought for myself was Karl Marx Plays Chess by Andrew Soltis
Mine was The 1000 Best Short Games of Chess by Chernev, followed by Practical Chess Openings by Fine found at a used book store in 1969.
i Just started playing the game and I purchased Logical Chess Move BY Move "Irving Chernev" Awesom book.
Can't remember my very first chess book but probably something by Fred Reinfeld. I still wouldn't mind having copies of his books 1000 Checkmates and 1000 Combinations.
First book I ever read was "How to think ahead in chess" by Horowitz and Reinfeld. The edition I had didn't have chess diagrams, rather they set the positions up on a chess set and printed the photographs. Objectively, it was a terrible book, but I learnt a lot from it.
