what would you consider after each move in OTB?

I consider

1. where are the weaknesses

2. what is the worst placed piece

3. what is my opponents idea

4. is it open or closed the position

Chessking4640

I look for tactics such as back rank weakness unprotected pieces

RainbowWantsUtojoinB1zhub

Middlesgame there are 4 things

My worst piece

My opponents best piece

My weaknesses

My opponents strengths and weaknesses

Then based on this I do candidate moves

Andrewtopia

Haven't played OTB in a while, but generally I consider:

Material situation just as a force of habit; any possible tactics; static weaknesses like backwards pawns; dynamic weaknesses like a bad piece; a couple of different plans. Then I decide on a plan, look for ways to execute it, and pick my move after another tactical check.

That all said, I don't always do all of these, which lands me in hot water a lot.

Something like:

My and my opponent's long term goals (like pawn breaks)
My and my opponent's short term goals (like worst placed piece)
Then I calculate some forcing moves
This cycle repeats a few times, as necessary (sometimes tactics show you new positional ideas and vice versa)

Then there's usually a finesse part where I check how close my 2nd best candidate move is, and what the difference would be if I chose that instead.

I search for forced draw

3. if 1, try to fix it

4. if 2, try to exploit it

5. if neither, just improve my worst piece

1 What does my opponent want to do with that move? Is it a threat I need to answer?

ConfusedGhoul

2 is that move a blunder? Do I have a winning tactic now? 3 is the move I want to make a blunder?
