It's basically just a text file containing PGN notation, usually with the suffix of .pgn so that PGN readers can distinguish them more easily.

Basically, a PGN is a file, where you can magically copy and paste into a viewer and it magically comes up with the game before you played :)
I was wanting to post a chess puzzle, and it said to put in my pgn file, so I couldn't do it.
