play. play some more. play more still, and play people who are better than you. Chess is a game you learn by making mistakes, and eventually, how NOT to make mistakes. Practice an opening (any opening, really - though I would start with two or three classic openings, and the defenses of them) until you have it down and understand the main ideas that are being explored with it - and THEN try another opening. The key to getting better is to NOT gauge yourself on if you are better than the opposition, but if you are better today than you were yesterday, and if you understand something new that will make you better tomorrow than you were today.
