Your general overall technique and positional understanding. You can get an advatage out of the opening, but if you don't understand precisely how to take full advantage when theory ends, then do not be surprised when you don't home the point.

Your technique can carry you forward out of any opening/position. If you don't think technique is important, just make the first move for the GM and he will still outplay you.
