IQ is too broad a description to fit chess.

Visualization and quick decision making are very important, as well as training.

Zero evidence for this claim. The kid has never taken an IQ test. He clearly has a great memory and seems reasonably bright, but there is no reason to believe he’a among the smartest people who ever lived.

Yes

I don't think anyone has actually define average chess player.  How about someone who plays at least 10 games of chess a week for at least 3 months

That should give enough time for people who don't really enjoy the game to quit.

The average player on chessdotcom is well below the average chess player in skill. I don’t know what this means for the average IQ here. Probably nothing. The writing in the forums, however, suggests a below average IQ.

I attribute the terrible writing to the infestation of infants and toddlers.

Not like you were using it anyhow.

Flinzard

there is a lot of stuff being said about averages but there has to be a correlation of rating to iq, but i don't think the average player would have a difference in iq to someone who doesnt play

But you're doing so well, considering your disability!

WelcomeToChinaTown

average is 85-115 and the WISC study performed did show correlation between playing strength and IQ among the 5 studies the weighted mean was 120 and the standard deviation was 14.8. four broad cognitive abilities (Gf, Gc, Gsm, and Gs) General short term memory, fluid memory feel free to look up the details it's very interesting. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0160289616301593#:~:text=Furthermore%2C%20the%20stronger%20players%20had,scale%20IQ%20and%20chess%20ra I think personally spatial pattern recognition especially in blitz/bullet, and long term memory are most important. I've heard/read Carlsens contemporaries say that his long term memory is what separates him from the rest of the pack I mean the guy probably remembers his birth. Chessuser999 said if i understand correctly I didnt rad the whole post just skimmed it but he said developing countries have people with lower IQ and dont produce strong chess players really???? Maybe you think it's bc they are in the west but many defected or immigrated here from those developing countries. historically ex. the Zurich Interzonal back in the day many of them probably didn't even have higher education This is anecdotal but I wouldnt be suprised. I don't know what test nowadays is the most accurate it might be the Mensa test but it would be interesting for every1 to take the free test and post their scores with a screen shot lol bc of course every1 would post they're a genius I'm jk I'm being cynical.
Unless your a super strong titled player at the end of the day it measn your good at a game. Iv'e met plenty of people who arent smart who are good at chess

Btw Magnus Carlsons IQ is 190

No, it's about 14,000. The IQ of the average chess player will be over 100 but by how much? I think 110.

110 was my estimate on page one. "Great minds run in like channels."
