What’s the deal with people faking ratings?

I keep seeing players with suspiciously high ratings like 1800 or even 2200 but they’ve only played a handful of games and the games have been against 800’s.

Then they go on the forums and give advice or talk about how much chess they know.

1.) Why this allowed (to enter your own rating)
2.) Why would you do this

1) You can't enter your own rating.

2) You'd do it for attention

(and if you check people's profiles like you did, then you'll catch them)

@Ilama47, new users can choose their own initial rating.

You can choose between 5, the highest being 2000.

But you can't "enter your own rating"

2000 is enough to fake a relatively high rating (then play with some 800 players and win them to have some record of good rating).

True . Sometimes when I am facing someone in a daily match and I see their rating as 19xx I get terrified . And then go up and see their profile and see 700 blitz after 4000 games. Lol

But still, there's no real benefit to them.

It won't get you into Stanford.
