Hikaru played a game yesterday where he checkmated his opponent by capturing a rook on the back rank with his pawn, then promoting said pawn to a knight. cxd8=N#.
For a moment I was speechless. My first thought after that moment was that it would probably be a very long time before anything like it ever happened again.

In the video it claims it's happened at least once. So it wouldn't be the rarest. But if it's true that it's happened zero times, then it would at least be tied for the rarest.
