What's up with So?

I just read Susan Polgar's posts about So quitting chess tournaments and disappearing. He was top 20 and seemed to be progressing well, but the last posts from Polgar sound a bit worrying, for example:

"I hope Wesley's fans and supporters will pray for him, and that he will be able to get his head straight"

Wow.  That's too bad.  I hope he gets it together as I was really looking forward to him switching federations to the USA.

The Philippines are important in the world of chess.  Anand spent time there, Fischer spent time there, Karpov played Korchnoi in 1978...Campomanes...

It's too bad their young hope fell away.

Susan Polgar: Wesley's 3rd round game is one of the best games this year. The combination is absolutely brilliant. Even the machines did not understand until later.

It was a huge win for us mentally in round 3. His teammates saw this and rallied.

Wesley also went for a brilliancy in round 2. He simply miscalculated. It happens. This is the price for experimenting a new style to try to be a more complete player. Cannot stick with just one style and hope to be a top 5-10 player.

The most important thing for me was he bounced back immediately after a devastating loss instead of getting down. This is also a part of the vast improvement overall.

So, if So it´s trying to become a top 5-10 player, obviously he is not planning to retire.

Chess seems to be as much about how strong you are mentally, as how clever you are.
