when black defends ruy lopez with queens gambit

John Bartholomew on youtube covers the scandinavian on his channel a lot. It's like his pet opening from both sides. I had trouble understanding this post at first, I think when you say queen's gambit you are referring to when your opponent gambits the queen pawn on the first move. When someone is talking about the Queen's gambit they are usually talking about the well known opening that starts out, 1. d4 d5 2. c4

I'm having a tough time when I open with the pawn and king knight expecting the opponent to continue with ruy lopez or italian, but instead they push their queen pawn forcing me to either take or get suffocated with a barage of pieces. I havent had much luck with either taking or not taking. Is there a good lesson you could recommend on this defence? So far I have been practicing with just white, but I have the same problem with defending queens gambit if I am black too. Thanks for any help.
