When can we say the end game has started?

I was interested in when one can say the endgame has officially started?

When the Queen's come off the board you're going to be getting into an endgame quite quickly but what's the number of pieces on the board to say, "Yeah, the endgame has now officially started".

My guess is; a rook and two minor pieces each is what constitutes the "beginning" of an endgame.

Any thoughts and suggestions?

If only the queens are off I think of that as a queenless middlegame. If queens + more is off it becomes debatable. :) Queen + minor pieces are generally endgames in my mind.
