When I reach 1500, I'm going to:

- go to Las Vegas and bet $10,000 on one hand of blackjack

- get a vanity license plate that says "Mr 1500"

- skydive without a parachute into a big pile of marshmallows

- set myself on fire and jump off a 5 story building into a swimming pool

Why wait for 1500?  Go for it right now.  Laughing

I got to a chess rating of 1607 in danish chess union and dropped to 1512 now I am 1485.
shouldn't it be: "when I get to 1600 and can belong there?"

getting to 1600 is easy ...staying there is difficult.

just join 3 otb tournaments simultaneously with a rating of 1400
do well in the 3 tournaments and you are at 1600.
if you get 100 points in one tournament you just need 50 in the other 2.

The OP is trumpeting 1600 Turn Based on Chess.com.  Big Difference.

Then there's no incentive for me to keep trying to improve - though I might start the Dept. of Motor Vehicle paperwork for the vanity plate going since that probably takes a while to process and hopefully I'll be 1500 by the time it's ready for pickup . . .

I'm just curious why you would wait til "1600" to basically "stop being an asshole" (basically what you described)

You are asssuming I did do some of those things.

I've been studying chess for about 6 months now and I'm on the brink of breaking 1600 in online chess, and I feel like I'm playing worse lol.  The last thing I have on my mind is belittling people I beat.

Thank you for getting the post.  I'm at 14 and change right now...

Maybe I should do 1500 all over again?

Happy chess!

I've learned that the more you play and study, you find out really how little you know about chess lol.

Sorry.  Just imbide, and learn cold, roughly 3 decent chess books--

An opening repetoire book, tactics book, and fundamental endgame book.

Lots of choices available, and USCF B Class (OTB) awaits you.  How long it takes is entirely up to you.

Paul Littlewood, Chess Tactics (1984) is excellent for reaching 1600.

And that's good for everyone.  So get with the program, @Dipstick.

@victhestick - do we have to wait 35 years?? I am a pleasure delayer... but... jeez! How about when you get back to 1500? Or 1600? If you want it to be a little sweeter... we can wait until you hit 1700. That is some Happy Chess!!

maybe but I am about to reach 1600 on chess.com and I don't celebrate if I reach 1600 unless I can stay there.reaching 1600 means nothing if I drop down to 1500 again because I am expected to win more.

Good point.  When I reached 1500 I was excited, only to fall back down to 1470 lol.

When we get to our goal (1500, 1600, 1700... whatever) we should all do this...

A 1600 "Live Chess" rating (on this site) is roughly the 90th percentile (or higher), last time I did a "back of the envelope" calculation.

1600 indicates you're a "fairly decent" chess player on this site.  Yes, lots of players are stonger.  But many, many, more are weaker.  So enjoy it.
