When is chess "fun"?

In your opinion, when is chess "fun", and what makes it become "not fun"? I'm curious to know what people think, since what's fun to one person can be intolerable to another (and since my inner being often can't decide what would be fun and what wouldn't (for various reasons)).

For me it was when I let go of the rating.

When there's just enough challenge. That “flow state” sweet spot — not too easy, not overwhelming. Your opponent pushes you to think, but doesn’t make you feel like you're drowning.

For me chess is fun when I am not playing.
