Don't "resine"... listen to "dude16rockstar"... yeah. "Resineing" is for GRANDMASTERS.

Guys, get it through your heads. Resigning is a part of chess. In happnes all the time - and more and more the higher you go. Good lord.

Resigning is certainly part of chess.  I resign often.  'Always fight to the end' is an immature way to play.  I do think that the answer to the question of when to resign varies greatly with the quality of play demonstrated by one's oppostion, though.

If internet time is so expensive then why do you have time to post on the forums so much :-)

Excellent question, Ozzie!

Seriously, the whole post is kind of ridiculous. Just deal with the fact that your opponent is exercising his/her right to play the game out the whole way. Just find another game. Don't focus on this sort of thing, focus on improving your chess game.

Another place to get annoyed is if you are in a tournament with a "slow" player - one who uses all their time. That way, the tournament can seem to go on forever. Again, just deal with it.

Patience is a vitrue.

Plus people slip up.  It's harsh to punish them for that but if you get to that next round isn't it worth a try? especially if you are trying to survive to wear down their last minute in a blitz.

Perhaps he's waiting for you to mate him.  We've all seen your difficulties in such cases.

Difficulties or not I STILL GAVE MATE. many people seem to have overlooked this salient point.

Jythier

If you gave mate, why are you waiting for him to resign?

I know I had a king/pawn vs. king ending that I thought i'd won and he said it was a draw.  He was right, but I didn't know that.  So we played it out, and when I realized it was a draw we ended the game.

Do I detect someone getting a mite tetchy here??????
silentfilmstar13
I WON!!!  THAT'S THE ONLY THING ON EARTH THAT COULD POSSIBLY MATTER!!!!  ALL MUST BOW BEFORE MY CHESS SKILLS(which are total crap, but better than some 'noob,' to use the parlance of our time)!!!!!!!!!  I ALSO CAN'T GRASP SIMPLE POINTS BECAUSE I HAVE A FRAIL MIND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Evil_Homer

Just looking at Larla's last post I could retort with a very witty remark, but am scared that I'd get barred from the site if I did.

I'll just have to titter away to myself so.

in my opinion in sports is not a good behavior resign!

I think is a very bad custom in chess to resign when things goes bad. In all soprts you never see a team resign only because is losing: sport has to be honored till the end also it's too easy to give up when things goes badly to  stay i nthe game in that situation will teach you something you can not buy anywhere: never surrender this is what sports teach to all of us stay there and try till the game is finished not before, is a sport teaching and also a life teaching and who don't understand this is better give up sports!

Larla you have to understand this may be you give up when your game is bad but this is not a good behavior, this is a loser behavior and mainly unsporting behavior.

When this type of sportsmanship is demonstrated, it deserves to be crushed.

Here's some more food for thought for this discussion. Let's take this completely arbitrary position. You're playing Black in this instance. Do you resign or play on? Let's assume that you're a very good player against another very good player. In fact, let's assume you have computer-like calculating abilities.

/I'm not saying I personally would resign, there's just something interesting here that could lead this discussing on an interesting tangent.

Checkers4Me

Just curious, are the two player of equal strength or am I the only one that has computer calculating abilities?

Either way, I would not resign in that game, but it does look kind of grim for black. Then again, since I really am a mere mortal, I doubt I would see a checkmate like a computer would.
